Sustainably feeding close to 10 billion people by 2050 is an unprecedented challenge that requires global awareness and bold action. A profound and systemic transformation of agri-food systems is needed in order to nourish the nearly 700 million people who are hungry today – and the additional 2 billion people the world will have by 2050.

In alignment with the core principles of the 2021 United Nations (UN) Food Systems Summit, the 2030 Agenda for Sutainable Development, and the strategic framework of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, the youth-led World Food Forum (WFF) engages and empowers youth to find innovative and actionable solutions that can create more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agri-food systems for all.

What is an agri-food system?

An agri-food system covers the journey of food from farm to table – including when it is grown, harvested, processed, packaged, transported, distributed, traded, bought, prepared, eaten and disposed of. It  encompasses non-food products (for example forestry and biofuels) that also constitute livelihoods and all of the people as well as the activities, investments and choices that play a part in getting us these food and agricultural production.

The Four Betters

The WFF encourages holistic solutions and actions that take into account the complex, interrelated nature of global agri-food systems and help minimize trade-offs in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Better production

Better Production

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, through efficient and inclusive food and agriculture supply chains at local, regional and global levels, ensuring resilient and sustainable agri-food systems in a changing climate and environment.

Better nutrition

Better Nutrition

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition in all its forms, including promoting nutritious food and increasing access to healthy diets.

Better environment

Better Environment

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial and marine ecosystems and combat climate change (reduce, reuse, recycle, residual management) through more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agri-food systems.

Better life

Better Life

Promote inclusive economic growth by reducing inequalities (urban/rural areas, rich/poor countries, men/women).
